Selma’s Riverfront Market Day Set Saturday, Oct. 13 | Events
Down South music, crafts, food and a scavenger hunt await patrons of this year’s Riverfront Market Day on Selma’s historic Water Avenue Oct. 13.
Dozens of venues from jazz and rock ‘n roll bands to barnwood and beeswax crafts will line the street beneath the balconies by the Alabama River. Try some Italian ice cream or a lunch of chicken-on-a-stick or Selma barbecue. Dine at a riverside restaurant or sandwich shop, and join the Water Avenue Scavenger Hunt for the chance to win a cash prize.
The annual festival, which coincides with Alabama Tale-Tellin' Weekend, begins at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children 12 and over and FREE for children under 12.
Sponsored by the Riverfront Market Authority in conjunction with the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society, the festival features quality artisans and craftsmen with wares that include glass-blown jewelry, children’s wooden toys, handmade soybean candles and beeswax candles, oil paintings on canvas, silverware jewelry, hand-painted barrettes, leather goods, jams, jellies, baskets and much more.
Music begins when the gates open with the long-time, local Dixieland band, Lower Society of Upper Water Avenue, at center stage. The Ramblers, which also play jazz and Dixieland, will be near the festival entrance at Songs of Selma Park. At noon, the Fabulous Shades, which are famous for Oldies from the 1960s and later, will wow the crowd, and local favorite Phillip Morgan will sing classic rock and roll and New Orleans reggae. Vintage Gray returns by popular demand in the afternoon with their Oldies rock and roll, and the local John Bull Band will perform blues, jazz and oldies.
New venues at this year’s festival are a scavenger hunt and the return of a children’s train ride.
Scavenger hunt participants can register at Scavenger Headquarters beginning at 11 a.m. to find clues that lead to three cash prizes: $300, first place; $200, second place; and $100, third place.
Clue locations range from Carneal ArtsRevive at one end of Water Avenue to Riverfront Park on the other end, said KellySue Giampietro, entertainment chairman, and winners will be announced at 4 p.m. Clues may be easier for those who have a good geographical and historical knowledge of Water Avenue, she hinted.
Visitors can take a break at Phoenix Park or Riverfront Park, and public restrooms will be available at indoor locations along the avenue.
Riverfront Market Day is located on Water Avenue at the foot of the Pettus Bridge, and there is plenty of free parking downtown. Stay the weekend, and enjoy the Tale-Tellin’ Festival on Friday and Saturday nights.
