Dance Your Shoes Off on Wednesday, April 17 at Bloch Park
Everyone is invited to come to this performance  It will take place "flash mob" style at Bloch Park. Join children and adults from all across Selma and the surrounding area as they dance and celebrate Jesus and the Easter story in a fun way. This will also be a missional opportunity in that each person that dances will literally "dance their shoes off" and donate a new or gently used pair of shoes to Soles4Souls and Pine Glen Ministries!

Anyone can do this simple dance, but if for some reason you won't make it or would prefer to watch, we need plenty of videographers and photographers! You can still donate a pair of GENTLY USED or NEW shoes, too!

Edmund Pettus Bridge designated as National Historic Landmark

Edmund Pettus Bridge designated as National Historic Landmark

WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Director of the National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis Monday announced the designation of 13 new national historic landmarks. Included in the designation is the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama that was the site of “Bloody Sunday” during the civil rights movement.

“Recognizing the Edmund Pettus Bridge as a national historic landmark is a fitting tribute as we observe the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement," said Alabama Governor Robert Bentley upon learning of the news. "All year, we are welcoming people to Alabama to reflect on our history, to celebrate the progress that has been made, and to look ahead to a brighter future. This designation recognizes the role not only of the bridge itself, but also of everyone who walked across it in the name of equality.”

Rite Aid Foundation awards $15,000 to Impact Alabama

The Rite Aid Foundation announced today a $15,000 grant to Impact Alabama. A non-profit organization based in Birmingham, Impact Alabama works collaboratively with higher education institutions and their surrounding communities in order to develop and implement social justice projects that work to achieve fundamental and systemic change throughout the State of Alabama. The organization will use the grant to expand FocusFirst, a vision screening program for children ages six months to five years, in Head Start classrooms and lower-income daycares across the state. The Rite Aid Foundation previously awarded Impact Alabama a $15,000 grant in 2010.

“Every child deserves quality healthcare, regardless of their environment or their family’s ability to pay,” said Gayle Rife, Manager of The Rite Aid Foundation.
