AHSAA 1A, 2A and 3A State Track Meet Returns to Selma on May 3-4, 2013

Mayor George Evans and Recreation Department Director Elton Reece are pleased to announce that the Alabama State High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) 1A, 2A, 3A track and field championships will be held at the Ralph “Shug” Jordan Memorial Stadium, 108 West Dallas Avenue, Selma, Alabama for the second year in a row. The public is invited to attend,

Through the efforts of Mayor Evans, Coach Reece and others, the AHSAA track and field championships returned to Selma in 2012 after a more than 20-year absence. In 2012, 150 schools, 500 coaches and 1,700 athletes participated. According to Coach Reece, more than 2,000 tickets were sold on opening day.

The number of unrestrained fatalities continues to rise in Alabama

Crash activity reports from the Alabama Department of Public Safety show the number of people who died in vehicle crashes where seat belts were available and were not wearing seat belts increased from last month.

According to preliminary traffic crash data, there were 45 people killed in vehicle crashes investigated by state troopers in Alabama in April 2013 compared to 42 in March. Of that number, 37 were in vehicles where seat belts were available, and 26 victims were not wearing seat belts up from 20 in March. That’s six more deaths.

“Too many people continue to die in crashes because they are not wearing seat belts,” said Transportation Director John Cooper. “It’s a proven fact that buckling up every time we get behind the wheel or ride as a passenger helps save lives.

Art exhibition & education highlight ADMH's promotion of National Mental Health Month

Each year the Alabama Department of Mental Health joins statewide and national organizations to promote National Mental Health Month, observed in May. Throughout the month, various advocacy organizations will host events statewide, and ADMH will present its 8th annual Capitol Showcase Consumer Art Exhibition.

Art Exhibition Details
More than 100 consumers around the state with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, substance use disorders or co-occurring disorders will showcase their artwork throughout the month at the Capitol. The exhibition promotes consumer dignity and helps the public gain a better understanding of the individuals ADMH serves. This exhibition is about more than just the artists’ work.

AthleTECH and Microsoft hold tech workshop in Selma

Cincinnati Bengals Michael Johnson's Football and Cheer Camp, in addition to teaching sport and life skills, also brought Microsoft to Selma at the St. James Hotel. Around 100 kids from each middle school in Selma and Dallas County had a chance to learn how to use technology to become successful in life.

The educational opportunity came from some of Microsoft's young professionals who used to play football with Johnson at Georgia Tech. They started a company called AthleTECH which partners with Microsoft. AthleTECH goes to athletic camps and schools to educate kids on how to use technology for work, play and for education. The kids run through drills on how to use the internet to look up things, and to play lifelike games to teach them how to work together with people they do not know.

Football and cheer camps give back to Dallas County youths

Two NFL football players recently came home to give back to their community. These men are from opposite sides of the field and opposing teams which compete against each other during the regular season. They come together for a common goal once a year to work at a football camp in Selma.

Cincinnati Bengal defensive end, Selma native and Dallas County High standout Michael Johnson and Ben Obomanu, a wide receiver from the Seattle Seahawks and former Selma High standout are working to give back to the community and bring young people together for a chance to meet up and learn basic fundlementals of football at the one day camp. Johnson hosts the camp each year and calls on friends from the NFL to come to Selma.

"We want to show the kids how to work hard for their goals and despite living in Selma they can still achieve their goals by working hard," said Johnson.

MJ93 breakfast aims to raise funds for Selma YMCA

NFL super star Michael Johnson and Selma native recently hosted a unity breakfast to bring his community together to support the local YMCA.

Johnson, pictured here with his mother Thomascene and father Samuel at the George Evans Reception Center, talked about how the YMCA meant a lot to him growing up. Johnson said working with the YMCA taught him basic values and work ethics which he says helped him in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals.

 Johnson has already given $10,000 to the Selma YMCA and says he will match dollar for dollar what the breakfast and silent auction brings in to benefit the center.

WHAT: Join us in celebrating our state-wide event, activities, recreation, museum tours and charity gift shopping the only day in Alabama dedicated to recognize citizens with all types of disabilities and/or special needs. SDAP Special Needs Day is a Disabilities and Autism Awareness Charity fundraiser.
